Colli di Serrapetrona is dedicated to the rediscovery of one historic grape varietal of the Marche region: Vernaccia Nera. As far back as 1893 Vernacia Nera was considered the better of the region's red varietals, but by the mid 1900’s it was entirely used to produce slightly sweet sparkling wines, probably in order to tame its wild and spicy character.
The desire to focus on a traditional indigenous grape and to experiment in its dry vinification symbolizes the estate commitment to create a link to its unique past - the terroir and people of Serrapetrona - and thus avoid the rampant globalization of taste. The 25 hectares estate is composed of 12 small vineyards positioned amidst forest with abundant wildlife. Planted in 1999 on Guyot system, they lay steeply 450 meters above sea level on a marly/sandy soil of great drainage. Vernaccia Nera ripens late and is harvested in the last days of October.
The entire production is of 60.000 bottles, 5 different interpretations of Vernaccia Nera. |
